That famous YouTube girl Natalie Tran makes travel videos
Using her signature offbeat and shy style, in a less staged and inoffensive manner, Natalie Tran entertains in her Lonely Planet travel videos. The video is poorly streamed, but the audio sounds good. You go, girl!
Ohhhhh, they’re so much better watched from her own site: http://natalietran.me/
Why to keep using a lock on checked baggage
Lately I came to the conclusion that though the lock I use isn’t a TSA-approved one, it’s useful as a theft deterrent to those handling bags in its long pathway to my hands at the end of my trip. In the rare times TSA will check my luggage, sure, they’ll break the lock, but all of the other times, my bags will be safe from the wandering hand, hoping to a score a little something. My advice is all more pertinent when I read articles like this one where an airline employee was arrested for stealing.
Real Madrid players sell us Madrid in this video
What adorable smiles they all have too and they speak in their native tongues about the city they play for and live in in this video saying why you should visit Madrid.
Well done, boys.

Stope foreign transaction fees with Capital One and Schwab
So I have the results of my foray into international transaction fee freedom! And it smells soooo good. It used to be that there were no fees when you went abroad. But banks got smart and started charging you for the privilege. Now, I am happy to say, some banks got even smarter.
Capital One credit card – FANTASTIC A+++
That’s right, you pay no foreign transaction fees for any international purchase. In the past, some stores overseas would ask if I wanted to pay in dollars or Euros, and it used to matter. But in the past few years, credit card issuers don’t care. If it’s a transaction made by a foreign company, you get billed. This means, my purchases from ASOS.com, Iberia, Spanair, and apartment rental agencies – bam, I got hit with a 3% foreign transaction fee every time. Now, with Capital One, on my statement, each foreign transaction lists its exchange rate which is generous to me, and there are indeed NOO additional fees. I love that. Plus, I got to put my own image on the card – a cute picture of me on a white and lavender background. With this card, ask for the transaction to be put through in the original currency instead of U.S. dollars when they give you the choice. You’ll likely get a better rate from Capital One.
Schwab High-Yield Investors Checking Account – FANTASTIC – A+++
I can’t help but rate these two options highly. Though Schwab doesn’t list the exchange rate on each transaction nor the original amount – so save your receipts – they refund any fee charged at the end of the statement cycle, and do not charge you either a % nor flat fee for the ATM withdrawal. For domestic use, it’s great for when you don’t feel like running around finding your bank’s ATM machine. For foreign withdrawals, I’m just ecstatic. My regular bank charges $5 PLUS 3% in addition to the average $5 foreign bank charge. For $300, that amounts to a sobering $19. With Schwab, nothing, nada, $0.
Warn your bank if you have foreign travel plans
Note that for any bank’s ATM card, you should your bank in advance – sometimes it’s called the Fraud Department – and tell them where and when you’ll be out of the country so they don’t block your account. That happened to me once, and I have to say it’s not fun.
I hope these policies don’t change, because I like being a happy traveler.
Getting a license to travel to Cuba – restrictions lifted
I had been waiting for this ever since seeing the spectacular (but fake) representations of Cuba in its golden years in the movie Original Sin with Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie. And with the election of Obama, the restriction to travel to Cuba was one of the things I thought he would relax, which he finally did last week.
Under certain licenses detailed on the U.S. government’s website – professional, religious, and academic – American citizens can travel to Cuba. Apparently, with certain visas they have to remain within Havana, and they have to obtain non-U.S. medical insurance which can be purchased upon entry.
Alas, I have no academic or professional reasons to go, so I am stuck looking from the outside, but this is one step further to some day being able to see this once-paradise famed for its hospitality.
Happy New Year!
The fuel surcharge is now often more than the base ticket price for an overseas flight. Nonetheless, flights seem to only be $100 to $200 more this winter, so you may as well take advantage. The exchange rate with European currencies isn’t too shabby either right now.
I for one would feel privileged to watch some Barcelona soccer games, either live or in a nice warm bar. I only see them once every week or two via espn3.com.
More naked men thanks to Dieux du Stade
It’s the new Dieux Du Stade coffee table book which features ripped (mostly) French rugby players. I have the last one from 2005 which is beautiful as well. The new one for 2010 is available from amazon.com for under $38, while it really is worth much more than $100. I gave it to myself as an early Christmas present. I am a happy girl.
The one rugby player in it that I’m gaga over is Henri-Pierre Vermis, perhaps 29 when the pictures were taken, he is truly a man – with an intimidating physique and eyes that appear a crystal blue even in the all black-and-white photos. He’s mesmerizing. Most of the other models are young rugby players maybe aged 20-25 who I’m sure will please many of you. I would like to know for which teams they play, but at least one can search in the index who the hottie on page XX is and research him yourself.
This one features a ton of architectural and gritty outdoor locations. The art connoisseur will love this book as will those who enjoy sex with men. There is a homo-erotic flavor throughout, which doesn’t bother me a bit. Why interrupt the images with an errant boob?
I do wish that European men would believe in circumcision – it would have enhanced their lovely manhoods – but I’ll just appreciate what I’m given. Unfortunately, I can hardly see American athletes posing and exposing all given our still giggly society, so I’ll take the Frenchies without complaint.
Merry Christmas to me! I’m so good at giving myself gifts I lick my lips over.
European bachelorette party packages
In line with the previous post, here’s a great site for your European bachelorette party / hen night needs. stagsandhens.com. They put together travel packages so you can just do the drinking/ogling without worrying about what’s coming next.
A sweaty, sexy reason for women to go to the U.K.
So I was heading back to Philadelphia for a girls’ weekend and remembered a strip club featuring male dancers called “The Cave” which has sadly retired or become shit depending on the review. In my google searching, I found an alluring link with a shiny, chocolaty chest on it and found the lovely multi-city Dream Men Show site. Even their video is fun to watch. Female clients can be of any size, but if you’re a man who works there, you’re built like an Adonis and have a face to complement your body. Yumm. So if I never had a reason to go to the U.K. before, I think I’ve changed my mind. I feel the sudden urge to go British! Many of their dancers have modeled for fashion labels or appeared on television shows or in film. You go, boys!
My new favorite online U.K. stores – ASOS, Reemclothing (for men) and UkTights
My quest for smooth sheer stockings meets success from a UK shop!
I have been searching for years for jet black sheer-to-waist pantyhose. I don’t want shiny – which makes legs look fatter, I don’t want scratchy or those that appear to have a prominent striped knit as is the case with cheap brands like No Nonsense, I don’t want uncomfortable and unnecessary control-top hose. I don’t want off-black, smoky black, kinda sorta black. I don’t need luxury. Years ago in Philadelphia I bought very comfortable hose for 99 cents a pair! They would stay on well but not squeeze me at the waist, making a sleek look under tight clothing and had a sexy narrow black stripe for the girl parts.
It was easy to get them years ago, but not anymore since many are going bare-legged. But there are looks where an opaque tight just makes you look thicker, bulkier, and the sheer is sexy.
I finally found some from two countries, The U.K. and Australia and ultimately purchased several different kinds, some no-run, to test them out. Only 4.50£ (roughly $7 U.S.) to ship any-sized order from uktights.com. Oh, and they have snazzy colored tights as well, so check them out!
Gorgeous, huge variety of affordable, well-made dresses including in smaller sizes!
Asos.com, I love you! Until the end of September 2010, they’re offering fabulous free shipping to and from the U.S. (the free return label has an Atlanta address). And normally, it’s only $6 U.S. anyway! Cheaper than many U.S.-based online stores. Standard delivery takes about two weeks. My last search for dresses in my size resulted in over 1000 styles. Oh, my God! Ecstasy! I bought three dresses a month ago, and I was skittish about the sizing, as I wear a 2 in designer U.S. styles, and ordering a 10 just seemed wrong and the number made me feel huge, but I bit the bullet and they fit as I hoped, no returns for me, thank you!
Then I placed another order for a girl in my household. She has trouble finding cool clothes in her size as she’s just a little too thin for juniors sizes. No problem! She’s a U.K. sized 6, I ordered her four dresses and an awesome skirt and they all fit like a glove! I also bought shirts for my man, and though sizing was more difficult, as he likes a snug fit but we like the ability to dry clothing in the dryer as well, still, nice styles. Note: ASOS isn’t a treasure trove for dudes, just allows you to pad your order with a few things for your man, making you seem less vain.
Sexy, sporty men’s styles
Even better for men, Reemclothing.com. Sporty, sexy, fitted, or just urban and cool, love them. Though the jacket ordered had a few minor stitching issues, it’s ultra cool, and the short-sleeved shirts are comfy, fitted, well-made and distinctive. The only bad thing I have to say is that the 18£ ($28 U.S.) flat shipping cost is steep (though it arrives pretty quickly, a week I believe). From a sheer sales perspective, reducing that to encourage overseas purchases is just smart. Do you hear me, reem, eh? I’d purchase much more often if you made it easy for me.
